Julie Harris as Emily Dickinson in "The Belle of Amherst"

In the face of objections by homophobic apologists, Emily Dickinson's biographer, Rebecca Patterson, stated conclusively that the poetess was a lesbian.

Emily Dickinson was an early American original, utterly romantic, highly forthright, deliciously humored and sometimes deliberately eccentric. In her lifetime she wrote over 1700 poems. Her fame came after she died in 1886 and continues to grow to this day. The title of the play, "THE BELLE OF AMHERST" comes from an adolescent letter she wrote to a friend at the age of 15: "I am growing handsome very fast indeed! I expect I shall be the Belle of Amherst when I reach my 17th year."

Julie Harris, four-time Tony Award winner, is currently topping her brilliant career in theatre with her portrayal of Emily Dickinson in "The Belle of Amherst," a new romantic play by William Luce based on the life of America's most famous poetess. She comes to the Hanna Theatre beginning March 14th for a limited engagement of one week. Ms. Harris scored a smash hit on Broadway in "The Belle of Amherst" last season and, on tour, has set box office records at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, and elsewhere.

Mike Merrick and Don Gregory, producers of the highly successful "Clarence Darrow" starring Henry Fonda, are presenting "The Belle of Amherst" which was directed by Charles Nelson Reilly. Mr. Reilly, who heretofore achieved a national reputation as an exuberant Broadway and television comedian and actor, scored a great success with the critics in his debut as a Broadway stage director with this production. "The Belle of Amherst," which

Mr. Luce wrote after compilation by Timothy Helgeson, was designed and lighted by H.R. Poindexter. The set represents portions of Emily Dickinson's home in Amherst, Mass., which she called "The Homestead," and where she lived from her birth in 1830.

Julie Harris is a star who has probably exhibited more variety in her roles than any other actress of our day. She won the fourth of her Tony

Charles Nelson Reilly, Director

Awards on Broadway when she starred in "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln," her three others came.for her outstanding performances in "Am a Camera," "The Lark" (as Joan of Arc), and "Forty Carats." She has played Shakespeare with the Old Vic, the Stratford (Ont.) Company, and the New York Shakespeare Festival, and was in such major Broadway production as "Mlle Colombe," "The Member of the Wedding," "The Country Wife," "A Shot in the Dark" and many others including "In Praise of Love" with Rex Harrison two seasons ago.
